Background of the study
Accurate interpretation in legal proceedings is essential for upholding justice and ensuring that all parties receive fair treatment. In Hausa language legal settings, interpreters are tasked with conveying complex legal terminology, procedural details, and culturally nuanced testimony. Professional training programs have been established to equip interpreters with specialized skills such as legal vocabulary mastery, ethical conduct, and rapid real-time interpretation (Abdullahi, 2023). These programs often include simulated court sessions and role-playing exercises to prepare interpreters for the fast-paced and high-stakes nature of legal environments. However, despite these initiatives, variations in interpreter performance persist due to differences in training quality and practical exposure. Challenges such as misinterpretation of legal jargon or failure to capture the subtleties of courtroom discourse can lead to miscommunications that adversely affect legal outcomes (Suleiman, 2024). This study explores how interpreter training influences accuracy in Hausa legal proceedings by analyzing performance metrics, reviewing training curricula, and gathering feedback from legal professionals. The goal is to identify gaps in current training approaches and propose enhancements to improve interpreter performance and ensure greater accuracy in legal contexts.
Statement of the problem
Despite the existence of specialized interpreter training programs, inaccuracies in Hausa language interpretation during legal proceedings remain a critical issue. Errors in translating technical legal terms and procedural instructions can lead to misunderstandings that compromise the fairness of judicial outcomes (Suleiman, 2024). Variability in training quality and limited practical experience contribute to inconsistent interpreter performance (Abdullahi, 2023). This study aims to identify the key factors behind these inaccuracies and assess the overall impact of interpreter training on legal translation accuracy, thereby providing a basis for improved training practices.
